Head of User Research and Service Design, The Scottish Government
Cat is the Chief Designer (Office of the Chief Designer) and Head of the User Centred Design family of professions (User Researchers, Service, Content, Visual and Interaction Designers) in Scottish Government. Prior to joining the Civil Service, her career ranged from developing and selling an Internet trade mark monitoring system, to managing a media monitoring agency, to Director of Operations on a UNHCR funded project to Bosnia during the Balkans War. After that she took a PhD in Computing and became an academic. During her academic career she worked on a number of EU, industry and EPSRC research projects, supervised 5 PhD students to completion, designed and led a masters in Design Ethnography, and lectured and consulted on design in India, the USA, Europe and Australia. Companies she collaborated with include Intel USA, Bang and Olufsen, Goretex, Unilever UK, Microsoft USA, the BBC, Swisscom and NCR UK.
