Head of Cities, Arup
Steve recently joined Arup’s Digital Group where he works in the cities team. Providing support to global cities, he advises senior personnel on strategy and vision as well as providing design support for implementation programmes. His clients include both UK and international cities as well as a number of private sector and academic organisations.
Previously, he was Head of Future Cities at Manchester City Council where he led the co-ordination and delivery of the ‘Manchester Future Cities’ programme. He was responsible for design and securing the city’s successful €24m EU Lighthouse submission -Triangulum, and the £10m UK Internet of Things City Demonstrator – CityVerve. Prior to this he was Head of Low Carbon Economy for Greater Manchester, establishing the city region as the UK’s first Low Carbon Economic Area for the Built Environment as well as a joint venture with the Green Investment Bank. He has also worked on a range of economic development projects for a broad global client base and managed sustainable regeneration projects in Bankside and Peckham whilst at the London Borough of Southwark.
He studied Geography at the University of Sheffield and holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Technology from Imperial College, London. He has held a number of external positions, advising both UK Government and the European Commission on their respective smart city initiatives. He is a Knowledge Research Fellow at the University of Manchester and a member of the UK City Standards Institute Board.
